I have been editing for many years, an activity that originally stemmed from my love of critical reading and writing. Since that time, my work for clients has included copyediting of doctoral dissertations, masters theses, and term papers in the humanities; creation of website and press-release copy; editing of non-native English (ESL) documents for style; and professional and technical writing, including psychological reports and arts-based grant applications.
Clarity, conciseness, and a lack of ambiguity are three key areas that I bring to my work, above and beyond the basics of correct grammar, syntax, and punctuation. Ambiguity in meaning, open-ended use of punctuation or prepositions, overly-complex constructions—these are writing pitfalls that will detract from your copy, will cost you money and customers, and can potentially even lead to legal disputes. My copyediting is done meticulously and with these pitfalls in mind, to ensure that your copy is not only correct, but that it is elegant, easy to read, and—most importantly—effective.
