One of the most difficult stages of writing is correction. When one knows exactly what one means to say, it is a challenge to look at one's own writing objectively and read from the perspective of an outsider. I strive to help writers of any genre achieve the most effective communication possible for their ideas. Word choice, grammar, spelling, and punctuation are all areas that can make or break a piece of writing: good usage enhances the content, but poor usage can distract from the content and destroy communication.
I have an extensive knowledge of grammar and punctuation rules. I have studied grammar (linguistics, English grammar, and the grammar of classical languages whence English grammar rules come) enthusiastically. I teach elementary and high school students at a school where spelling and grammar errors can cause a student to lose up to 10% off his or her final grade, so I correct students' writing daily. In my teaching position, I have worked with several exchange students, so I am comfortable helping writers for whom English is not a first language.
I have experience in academic writing, newsletters, and educational materials. I have also taught a wide variety of subjects, including Greek, Latin, aesthetics, music, math, and chemistry, so I am familiar with the key ideas and the key terms in these fields. Work in the humanities is my preference, particularly if help with content is required; I am able, however, to correct writing in virtually any field if content is sound.
I work quickly but thoroughly. I have access to a wide variety of software programs and am quite willing to learn to use a new program if necessary.
I am familiar with work in Microsoft Office Word 2007 and Adobe Acrobat Reader. However, I have access to many other types of software and training. If another program is required, please contact me and I will be glad to let you know whether I can accommodate your needs or not.
