After twenty years as a Senior Editor of Harper’s Magazine and a published writer of fiction and non-fiction, I am offering freelance editing of novels, essays, short stories, articles, book proposals, and synopses. I offer general evaluations, line-by-line editing, and rewriting. In addition, I am available for ongoing coaching for works requiring many drafts in a short period.

As an editor at Harper’s Magazine, I have worked with (and been praised by) writers including George Saunders, David Foster Wallace, Lewis Lapham, Jack Hitt, Joyce Carol Oates, Michael Pollan, Orville Schell, Padgett Powell, Allan Gurganus, Rick Russo, Tobias Wolff, George Plimpton, Paula Fox, Tim Winton, Lynn Freed, Tony Earley, Fred Busch, and Joyce Hackett. Some of these writers have found my work so remarkable that they have been moved to write testimonials. I am an acute and caring editor who can improve any text, discuss suggestions clearly, and offer rewriting that fits your voice. I have evaluated and given advice regarding more than ten thousand manuscripts on every subject imaginable. I have also taught and edited at the Cape Cod, Bread Loaf, Santa Barbara, and University of Pennsylvania writing conferences, as well at the Gotham Writers’ Workshop. My own writing has appeared in Harper's (the Harper's Index, and the story, "Octopus") and in literary journals. My first novel—sold unwritten—will be published by Pantheon in 2008. I have been awarded four residencies at Yaddo, and a seat on the Rockefeller Foundation’s Arts and Humanities Committee. I am the rare editor who can edit material in any style, on any subject, of any degree of difficulty, under any deadline.
