My present career has afforded me the opportunity to read and evaluate books and articles across a variety of disciplines. I am specifically a systems librarian working in a college setting. This position has required extensive knowledge of computers and computer networks. This has been my world for the last 15 years.
I have developed a great love of my native language, i.e. English. This has led to frustration when confronted by its misuse and abuse. So, I am particularly aware of mistakes in written English. Mistakes have multiplied in everything published on the Internet. I want to, in some way, to fight this trend. My goal is to be a proofreader for any and all projects involving written English.
I have a background in several foreign languages. Among these, in order of understanding, include: French, Latin, Italian, Russian and Spanish. I have found that this knowledge helps a great deal when correcting English. I also have a working knowledge of the Cyrillic and Greek alphabets.
Previous to my career in library science I had worked in the natural sciences. I have 13 years of work experience in science laboratories. Although my undergraduate degree is in biology, I have worked in the field of chemistry, in quality control and in research and development. During this I have helped prepare patent applications and scientific papers. I have coauthored a conference paper on a novel chemical, which was eventually commercialized.
My experience in proofreading has been limited to in house projects in all of my work experience. In addition I have done work for friends and family. I want to extend my expertise now.
I am highly organized and detail oriented. I am a perfectionist. I am a skilled researcher. Former member of Mensa.
I have computer skills well above the typical office worker since that is a requirement of my current position.
