Editing copy is like playing baseball. When I was in Little League, I liked positions where I would be able to catch the baseball often. I particularly enjoyed first base and center field, but I found a comfort zone as a catcher. As long as that batter did not hit the ball, it was my responsibility to catch it. And it did not always come right at me, which meant that I had to move quickly to grab it.
As a copy editor, I consider myself a catcher. When something does not seem right, I want to catch it before it makes it into the newspaper. In my current position with Harcourt, my job entails editing and proofreading tests as well as ancillary materials for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (the FCAT).
I would like to continue to work as a freelance copy editor or proofreader. But the words "proofreader," "copy editor" and "catcher" are not completely accurate. They are just job titles; they do not encompass what I can really do. There is more to editing copy than catching factual errors and ensuring consistency in style and grammar - there is an understanding about how words can work. I am the catcher for you.
