Good proofreaders should be good writers as well. This statement best describes me since I started out in this business as a writer and have made several exceptional writing jobs for the last six years.
I started out as a contributor for a local publication, submitting works on a per-project basis. Then I went freelance, accepting projects that mostly involved student research papers, although a few business-based works also came my way.
Afterwards, I decided to go full time, working as a writer-researcher for a small outsourcing writing company. I stayed there for more than a year, with some of the works I did getting special mention for being informative, highly-relevant, and free of major grammar errors.
In between this job and my free time, I decided to accept freelance editing jobs, many of which involved rewriting and/or editing of thesis and research papers and even a few literary works that needed revision and enhancement.
I am quite comfortable with any document type. However, given a choice, I would love to be involved in editing literary and research-based projects.
Still, an editing job is still a job, so as long as I feel that I can deliver quality results, an offer to proofread any form of document will always be welcome.
At present, I have been hired as a proof-reader for an outsourcing firm. Starting out middle of last year, the job involves the monitoring of e-mail and letter responses of the company's Customer Service Department, with special focus on sentence and logical flow of the responses as well as the checking of grammar mistakes. Other aspects of the job involve writing and proofreading of company documents and preparing regular grammar examinations for the Customer Service Department.
