I am a doctoral student, writing a dissertation in American religion and culture and I have a strong background in publishing. Before graduate school, I worked full time as a journalist. I often proofread my colleagues’ work. I covered a range of subjects so I know the terms used in fields like religion, law, politics, and medicine. My first journalism job was as a copy editor for an English-language paper in Mexico City, Mexico, where I helped train new editors. I still write, edit and proofread as a freelancer. For example, I proofread a non-fiction book for Quest. I also worked as a part-time copy editor for a daily paper in New Jersey.
My adjunct teaching includes proofreading and copyediting as I point errors and good points in my students’ writing.
I enjoy proofreading. I often can spot errors at a glance, which my colleagues find a boon, if it is before publication. I hate finding errors in published works. It is annoying and detracts from the author’s credibility.
I am familiar with publication editing styles, including MLA, Chicago, AP, APA. My journalism work has gotten me used to working quickly and meeting tight deadlines. My reading interests are eclectic, so I am well versed in popular culture, American history, the arts, technology and science.
