At 5 years old, I crept into my father's study and took out my notepad containing things I wrote: thoughts, prayers and longings. I typed them up as fast I could before my father came in to work.
I don't know if I innately wrote or emulated my father, a magazine editor, but I was and am always compelled to write, motivated by a fear that if I didn't, something inside me would fade, disappear.
However, in college, I turned to my second love, literature. I absorbed books and tried to understand them through literary essays, analysis and other academic forms of discourse.
Later, I pursued my masters in English education where I learned how to share literature and writing with those reluctant to open their hearts to it.
Upon graduating, I spent a year teaching technical writing at SUNYIT. While writing documents such as letters, proposals, and analytical reports, I instilled in my students the importance of grammar, usage, style, and revision.
I’ll always remember the intensity of my father’s work, of his words. And from what I imbibed in my father’s study, I hoped to have developed in my students—at the least, the basic skills of a competent writer; at the most, the essentiality of the written word.
