Researchers who use English as non-native speakers can encounter various barriers in getting their research published in international journals. Beyond English language problems, difficulties often arise due to a lack of awareness of target readers’ expectations, as well as unfamiliarity with publication procedures. I adopt these two approaches in my work - a focus on the appropriate rhetorical structure of research papers and the appropriate (and, of course, correct) English - and an understanding of the ‘culture’ of scientific publishing.
I have spent 13 years at Tokyo Institute of Technology (Dept. of Engineering) and Tokyo University (Dept. of Precision Engineering) teaching courses in Research Presentation Skills, assisting graduate students and researchers with international publications and conference presentations.
I can work with clients by offering advice at each step of the publication process from drafting to submission of a manuscript, not forgetting the important stages of correspondence with editors and/or referees about criticisms and revisions. The appropriate - not just correct - presentation of work at all of these stages leaves an impression on one’s audience.
