Profile I have a B.A. with a double major in journalism and political science. I also have a Juris Doctor degree in the law and am licensed to practice in the State of Tennessee, although I now am on inactive status for health reasons. I worked for seven for United Press International, first as a reporter in the Memphis bureau, then as manager of that bureau and finally as state manager for UPI in Alabama. I left in 1976 to become politics editor of the Memphis Press-Scimitar, an afternoon newspaper which ceased publication in 1983. I was a columnist as well as a writer, reporter and editor. When the paper folded, I used my severance pay to help pay my way through law school, where I earned my J.D. degree. I practiced law, mostly criminal defense, for five years before being forced to take disability after the first of nine heart attacks. I had a heart transplant in 2005. The transplant did not go well and I remain disabled. My first book, a non-fiction work about my medical odyssey is to be published within a few weeks. The title is "Defying the Bitter Old Hag of Death" and the subtitle is "How I Survived and Remained (Relatively) Sane Through Nine Heart Attacks, a Heart Transplant, Total Paralysis, Withdrawal of Life Support and Abandonment." If you would like to read an excerpt from the book, it is available at AuthorsDen.com/jimbalentine.
