I’ve been a writer and editor for three decades, writing on the staffs of the Associated Press, Maine’s dominant daily newspaper, a weekly newspaper, and four Maine magazines, and freelancing for a variety of national and regional publications, including Parade Magazine, Boston Globe Magazine, Down East, Yankee, Sports Afield and Newsweek.
I’ve been an editor of four small Maine magazines: a city magazine in Portland, a state golf magazine, the journal of the Maine Audubon Society, and currently the Maine Bar Journal. My work has earned numerous state and regional journalism prizes.
I created the University of Southern Maine’s journalism program and taught it for many years part-time. As a teacher and editor, I became skilled at improving other people’s writing in ways that keep their own voices intact. I am accredited in public relations, and some of my writing and editing is of news releases, brochures, and direct mail.
I am skilled in the use of both the AP Stylebook and the Chicago Manual of Style, and my software skills include Adobe InDesign.
