I began college as a journalism major thirty years ago. To earn some much needed income, I worked in the Writing Lab on campus, primarily assisting Asian students with their term papers and manuscripts. I was particularly fascinated by the way direct foreign language translations are often incorrect. For a number of years I worked in government, which involved technical writing and a lot of lengthy staff reports for politicians and laymen alike. A couple of years ago, I had the wonderful opportunity to be a writer and editor of two non-fiction books created for an art publisher. The text was taken directly from quotes of a foreign artist, so the key was to let his spirit shine though while making improvements to his spelling, grammar and punctuation. Presently I edit and proofread ad copy, marketing campaign text and press releases, and although I don't do it consciously, I'm always on the prowl for spelling and punctuation errors in everything I read. To me, a business has already lost a customer when they have not made time for proofreading, nor employed the valuable services of a copy editor.
