I have been an editor for many years. The style guide I used is The Chicago Manual of Style. The main reference for spelling, capitalization, word usage, etc., for my editing is Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, which uses the standard American English. If a term is undefined in the specific dictionary, other dictionaries may be of help. I once worked in a self-publishing company, particularly Xlibris Publishing Corporation. My quota for the month was four hundred thousand word count. I'm exposed in editing different genres; that includes fiction and nonfiction. I don't limit myself to editing, but I also do fact checking to verify the facts indicated by the writer. I also put comments and suggestions whenever necessary in the manuscript. In editing, I make sure that the words the writers are using are consistent. For instance in adjectives, we follow the royal order of adjectives. I make sure it has the same order in a different page if it is repetitively mentioned. If there is a need to change the grammar of the writer, I put the necessary suggestions for recast. I don't make direct change except for the obvious ones. Once a change is made in the manuscript, relevant comments and explanations are indicated for clarity.
Overall, the author has still the final say about his manuscript.
