This news, arts and copy editor has the breadth and depth of experience to see the forest and the trees. I've written and edited in print and Web formats for community, academic, daily and alternative publications. As a proofreader I've found the errors in the fine print (and the graphics) that editorial, legal and clients missed; I'm the language geek who enjoys parsing sentences. A stickler for clarity and accuracy, I respect deadlines and am not afraid to point out problems. After all, it's my job to find them before a reader does. With a demonstrated commitment to diversity and an ability to put technical data into concise prose that is clear to a lay audience, I can tackle any subject -- with the major exception of sports -- quickly and cleanly.
As a columnist who reviewed writing and editing manuals for Publishers' Auxiliary, the trade paper of the National Newspaper Association, I was clear in my take on editing: the job is to express the writers' ideas and present what the writer has to offer in a clear, concise and professional manner. Meet the writers' goals and respect their tone; the editor's expertise comes into play in using my knowledge not only of language and usage, but of how to reach an audience, in helping the writer/client achieve their aim. I edit from a reader's perspective.
