Profile Editing is what I do, ceaselessly. Reading has been my favorite activity for at least thirty-five years. By now, polishing text as I read has become second nature. I love the flow of words. If they are front of me, I am compelled to read them. If the text contains errors, stylistic flaws, poor word choices, improper punctuation, spelling mistakes, tortured grammar, or anything at all that impedes that flow, it must be corrected in my reading mind before I can continue swimming in the flow. To be able to concretely sculpt text in need of revision before it is published at all is particularly pleasing to me.
I find that this ability becomes increasingly important in the Information Age, our current time of instant publishing on the web. Increasingly, reading far and wide on the web, I find myself correcting and revising continuously, substituting correct vocabulary, rearranging sentences, rephrasing unfortunate prose, in order to glean some sort of flow of meaning from the text. The errors literally jump out of the “print” at me, screaming to be formed into something more readable. My days of active editing, with pencil in hand, began in High School, speed-revising friends' essays between classes to produce final, presentable papers to be turned in literally minutes before they were submitted. I was weaned on the classics. I have a degree in English Literature. I do not need to wonder if something is written correctly or not. I know the correct usage instantly, and how to quickly correct anything that fails to flow.
