Profile With 20 years of experience as an editor, proofreader, reporter and opinion columnist at newspapers and The Associated Press, I have learned to trim the fat from writing on a range of topics and to enhance readability.
I have a polite but ruthless eye for errors in grammar, spelling, usage and punctuation. I know the difference between "affect" and "effect," for instance, and how the word "begrudging" is often misused.
I currently write opinion and humor columns as well as editorials for a mid-size American daily newspaper. I also edit guest columns -- often by relatively inexperienced writers who need a lot of help fast.
The most important skill that I possess, however, is this: I know what I don't know. That may sound odd, but bear with me. The most dangerously unqualified editors are the ones who do not know the limits of their knowledge. Confident despite their ignorance, they fail to detect existing errors in copy and even commit the cardinal sin of creating errors that were not there in the first place. I have a keen sense for when a word, fact or figure doesn't feel right, and I spare no effort to figure out where the problem lies.
I have edited articles and reported on subjects ranging from campaign visits by presidents to interstate squabbles on water rights to really bad holiday desserts.
I have a bachelor's degree in English and Spanish from the University of South Dakota and a master's degree in mass communications from the University of Georgia.
I take pride in an extremely clean record in terms of errors of fact, grammar, spelling and so forth. I expect nothing less of myself, and you can expect nothing less of me.
