I am a recent graduate of the University of Kansas, recipient of a Bachelor of Science in Journalism, with a minor in linguistics and concentrations in English and history. Copy editing was the emphasis of my study of journalism, and I have already put the skills I learned there to work on more than one professional newsroom copy desk. During newspaper internships on the sports desks at The Kansas City Star and The Naples Daily News in Florida, I learned the importance of a quick turnaround time and how to streamline my editing to meet deadlines. I have edited articles on a multitude of topics, including breaking news and ethically sensitive topics. During college, I also edited articles on a volunteer basis for Ziarul de Garda, the only free media outlet from the Eastern European country of Moldova. The foreign newspaper was published in Romanian and translated into rough English by students there, and I was part of an American group tasked with smoothing the prose into understandable English for use by outside groups such as the United States government. Further, I have edited a Master of Social Work thesis on a freelance basis.
I hold a passion for language unlike many others my age (22), and the more I learn, the more I find to love. My courses in linguistics instilled a depth of focus on the most minute details of the English language that I have found incredibly helpful in my editing. My attention to the finer points of grammar and style are unmatched by peers, and my excitement regarding this field makes me an ideal candidate for any editing job.
