Whether you pronounce it Looey-ville or Lewis-ville or Lou-a-vul, the city on the banks of the Ohio River in north-central Kentucky is a special place.
Louisville is called the River City (a name it had even before there was a Music Man), the Gateway to the Midwest, and the Gateway to the South. It’s the home of the most exciting two minutes in sports (that’s the Kentucky Derby, run on the first Saturday in May at historic Churchill Downs, before the largest horse-racing crowd in America each year).
Louisville is also the corporate home of Kentucky Fried Chicken, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut; much of the bourbon sold in the U.S. and across the globe; and the departure point for most packages shipped nationwide and worldwide by UPS.
It also boasts a proud newspaper history and many top-notch editors. Before the Bingham family sold its media empire to the Gannett Corp. in 1986, The Louisville Courier-Journal was a Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper known for its liberal politics and socially conscious positions. The Bingham empire also included the Louisville Times and broadcast holdings. Under Gannett, the Courier-Journal remains the state’s largest circulation newspaper.
Louisville, the sixteenth largest city in the U.S., boasts several institutions of higher learning, including the University of Louisville, which also is home to the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law, named for the first Jewish member of the U. S. Supreme Court. The Presbyterian Church U.S.A. has its world denominational offices in Louisville, and operates the Presbyterian Publishing Corp. from the site. And the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary is located in the city.
By the way, Louisvillians pronounce it Lou-a-vul. But by whatever name, Louisville is a cosmopolitan, cultural, welcoming city. Y’all come, hear.
