UN organizations, bilateral and multilateral aid

Development aid is offered to developing countries in various forms. Through the UN system, it can be either multilateral or multi-bilateral. It is multilateral when financed by the budget of the UN specialized agencies themselves (such as the UNDP, ILO, WHO...) and executed by their experts. It is multi-bilateral when executed by a UN organization but financed by a bilateral donor. In such a case, projects are usually executed by experts chosen by the UN organisation but it is often the case that the donor country insists that their experts, equipment and services are used in the execution of the project. Development aid is purely bilateral when offered directly by a donor country to a recipient country and executed by experts from the donor country.
