The EditFast Test for Editors and Proofreaders
Before receiving any work from the EditFast administration or from clients
who come to EditFast looking for an editor or a proofreader, all EditFast editors
are given a rigorous test of their proofreading/editing abilities. The test
scores are used as just one element in the assessment procedure. When deciding
which editor will be chosen as a candidate for a specific editing or proofreading
project assigned by the EditFast administration we look at all the information
provided by that editor.
The editors' proofreading tests have been modified from tests provided by
Prentice Hall. Their
hope was that we could use the tests as a screening tool to maintain and improve
the already high quality of our editors.
There are three tests.
Test # 1
20 minutes
45 questions
Spelling, capitalization and punctuation
Test # 2
15 minutes
31 questions
Verbs, pronouns, adjectives or adverbs
Test # 3
15 minutes
24 questions
Sentence structure, sentence punctuation and clarity
Once you have started a test it must be completed during that browser session.
However, you do not have to do all three tests at one time. You can come back
at a later date and finish the tests you have not yet started.
You should be very careful when doing these tests. There are no second chances.
Only in very rare circumstances will an editor be allowed to repeat the editing
tests. Technical problems with the web site or an error on my part are the only
reasons that might be valid. If you feel you have not been able to complete
the test satisfactorily then you may contact me with
an explanation of why you think you should be allowed to take the test again.
