Copy Editor
By
A copy editor is a valuable asset for any media. Book publishers, magazines, newspapers and websites all use copy editors to keep their copy free of errors. But, a copy editor isn't just someone who proofreads. They are typically someone with a degree who has professional writing experience.
Depending on the type of copy to be edited, a copy editor should generally have experience with several different style types, such as MLA and APA. A copy editor must not only keep grammatical and factual errors out of copy, but generally correct style errors as well. This keeps a consistent style throughout the publication.
A copy editor may have to change a sentence here and there, but must be skilled enough to retain the tone and voice of the writer. A good copy editor also serves as a fact checker to some degree, and may have to check proper names to ensure that they are spelled correctly.
Formatting and making sure that pictures and text go together properly also falls to many copy editors. The last person to check over a publication before it goes to press, the copy editor should make sure that the pictures are in their proper place and that the copy is in the proper format for the publication. Most printed works rely heavily on their copy editor to keep them from embarrassing mistakes and to keep the confidence of the public. A few mistakes is all it takes for a publication to generate a bad reputation.
