Punctuation Check

It is depressing how little attention we pay to proper punctuation in our correspondence. We write e-mails and letters that would have our grammar teachers kill us! It is not just our mail that needs punctuation check; even published articles sometimes have embarrassing errors. A lot of us do not even any other punctuation marks apart from the comma and the period. If you are one of those, here is a refresher. Next time you are doing a punctuation check; look out for brackets, colons, semi-colons, dash, ellipsis, apostrophe, exclamation marks, parentheses, quotation marks and hyphens. In addition to the comma and period, all these are punctuation marks. For a successful punctuation check, you need to know what are punctuation marks, where to use them and in the correct way. For instance, punctuation marks at the end of a quote always come inside the quotation marks. Others like a semi-colon are used to join two phrases that support each other. Commas are frequently used and detail should be paid on where to put them otherwise they will distort the meaning of the sentence A punctuation check should have your sentences convey the intended message. We mostly fall prey to co joining words in places where punctuation marks would be more suitable. On the other hand, wrong use of punctuation marks can disrupt flow of ideas and change the message you want to convey. A punctuation check after you are finished writing your work will point out incorrect application. Luckily, electronic punctuation checks are available and your wok in editing is simpler. Modern electronic typewriters come with a punctuation check feature. The machine is fitted with a warning system that alerts you when a punctuation mark is used incorrectly. Next time you need to write that urgent e-mail, spend time on a punctuation check.
