Technical writing is a style of writing that tailors the writing to
the audience. It is generally used to explain a product, a procedure
or a specific way of doing something. The key to technical writing is
creating a document that delivers the information to the audience so
that they can best use it. That means assessing what the audience
already knows about the subject and tailoring the language for that
level of knowledge.
Effective technical writing will take into account the type of jargon
that the audience is likely to know. For beginners, more of the
document will be devoted to explaining the jargon than in a document
meant for people with a more advanced knowledge of the subject matter.
Technical writing is expected to be a comprehensive way of explaining
how to do something or how to use a specific object. Each step is
written in the order that it should be performed so that no other
document is needed. Technical writers also create an index that can
define some of the words used. Another index might be a list of items
that are used in performing the task. Most technical writing also
contains a section that is devoted to problems that often come up and
what the solutions are.
If technical writing is done correctly, it will be easily readable by
the audience it was meant for. It will answer all the questions that
audience has and it will be the only reference the audience needs to
perform the task.
