Technical writing

Technical writing is where the writer is tasked with writing documentation that explains technical issues in ways that non-technical people can understand. Technical writing might be responsible for the writing of different manuals. Therefore a good technical writer can write about a complicated technical subject or tasks in ways most lay people can understand.

Technical writing requires good writing, because if anything is written incorrectly, readers may act improperly on what is said, causing problems at home and at work. Technical writing, a subset of technical communication, is used in fields as diverse as computer hardware and software, chemistry, the aerospace industry, robotics, consumer electronics, and biotechnology

Technical Writing helps to communicate understandable information that can help people be productive. Technical writing mainly involves items such as "how-to" manuals, reference guides and corporate reports. As a result of the emergence of new technologies, trends, the frame of references that encompasses technical writing has tremendously increased.

In technical writing the information is usually obtained from existing documentation, and from subject matter experts. A subject matter expert (SME) is any expert on the topic the writer is working on. For that matter Technical writers usually are not SMEs themselves unless they're writing about creating good technical documentation.

In technical writing, there is need for strong language skills, and one must understand the highly evolved conventions of modern technical communications. For technical documents to be useful, readers must understand and act on them without having to decode wordy and ambiguous prose.
