Capitalization
Proper Use of Capitals to Begin Sentences
The first letter of every sentence is capitalized, regardless
of the part of speech of the opening word.
Examples:
The ball bounced.
Jogging is an excellent way to stay in shape.
Purple flowers lined the tree-shaded lane.
Note: Capitals are only used to begin sentences, not independent
clauses set off by semicolons or colons. The only time a capital
follows a colon is if the colon is introducing a full-sentence
quotation. (See
the section on quotation marks for examples.)
Example:
Wrong: Love is a wonderful thing; Don't throw it
away.
