Using Commas
The Introductory Comma
The introductory comma separates introductory words,
phrases, and dependent clauses at the beginning of a sentence
from the main clause.
Examples:
• Therefore, we signed the papers as he requested.
(introductory word)
• In addition, we agreed to rewrite the contract next
week. (introductory phrase)
• When the check arrived, we were disappointed to learn
that only $50 was being refunded to us. (introductory dependent
clause)
