The Renaming Comma
The renaming comma is used to enclose a word or group
of words that renames a person or thing already named in the
sentence.
Examples:
Bill Jones, the president of Interwest Health Services,
will speak at the luncheon. (the president of Interwest
Health Services renames Bill Jones)
Pamela Adams, a business education teacher in the
Manchester School District, has received the district's
"Teacher of the Year" award again this year. (a businesseducation teacher in the Manchester School District renames
Pamela Adams)
We sent the checks to the president, Marlow Marchant,
and to the vice president, Alan Kimball. (Marlow Marchant
renames the president, and Alan Kimball
renames the vice president)
