Academic copyediting

Academic copyeditor for academic publishing

Has your scholarly article or book manuscript been accepted for publication by an academic publisher? The next step in the academic publishing process is to prepare the manuscript for submission. A copyeditor’s job is to edit your manuscript in conformance with the publisher’s submission guidelines. Although academic publishers usually have their own copyeditor do a light editing job, they will nevertheless ask you to submit a clean manuscript that has been formatted according to their house style. An academic copyeditor will carefully check your journal article, monograph, or other writing destined for scholarly publication for some or all of the following (depending on level of copyediting):

- mechanics: spelling, capitalization, punctuation, etc.; editing to conform to the chosen style manual (Chicago, MLA, APA, etc.) and the publisher’s house style
- correlation: checking table of contents against chapters, footnotes against bibliography, numbering of footnotes, tables, etc.
- language: grammar, syntax, usage; possibly wordiness and clarity
- content: factual inconsistencies; possibly organization, logic, etc.
- permissions: identify text, tables, or illustrations that may require permission to reproduce
- type coding: adding tags to mark headings, block quotations, foreign language characters, etc. for the typesetter

The copyediting job can be light, medium, or heavy, depending on the state of the manuscript, your budget, and/or the publisher’s requirements. The heavier the copyediting, the more familiarity the academic editor should have with the field in which you are writing. Academic editing also requires familiarity with academic standards in areas such as proper citation of sources (avoiding plagiarism) and the use of bias-free language.
