Don’t just write your academic essay – plan it !

List things to do (in order), then ‘Do’ them !

1) Start tidy & organised:

Blank (Word) document with a [Footer] including:
Name & Initials Date Page#
• Font - something like Arial / Size 10 - 12 / line spacing 1 ˝ or 2 (makes it easier to read)

** [If you are not sure how to create a new document, footer etc...... ask somebody who knows, or Google it ! If you do nothing .... you get nowhere.] **

2) Front Sheet (if required) : Name etc.

• Copy down EXACTLY the assignment guideline or question you were given
(You can keep referring to this, to make sure you have covered all the required points)

3) Contents Page (if required).

Now, you have to PLAN your essay :

Essay Plan :
1. Assignment question / guideline
Using a highlighter pen, identify every / separate / part of the question you are being asked. Then think of questions that help explore each area of the topic.

2. Go ‘research’!
Ask people questions, use the net (best tool you can have), use the library – anything that will help find a load of information that you can use.

• Organise the information you find, under subject areas [new sheet for each area].
• Make notes as you go along, as to where you found the information.
• Keep collecting !

As you research, you will find that information links together. These are your ‘themes’ & can be used to build your writing.

3. Start building your essay

Start / Introduction
You should leave this pretty blank, until your essay begins to take shape. Make sure though, that you will be addressing the key areas you identified in the assignment question.

Body Text : form your general ‘themes’ into boxes i.e. ‘Theme’ 1 , ‘Theme’ 2 etc.
then .... put things IN the boxes ! As you have found all the separate bits of information during your research, think which area they come under.

6. Conclusion ** really important **
Having raised & explored all these ‘themes’, what does it all mean?

We will look at each area in future pages !
