Editing Christian articles, devotions, books

Editing Bible studies, Christian curriculum

Editing Christian writing is an important specialty because while any good editor can edit for grammar, style, and usage, a Christian editor brings a shared perspective to the table. Just as an author may feel that a work is inspired by God or the Holy Spirit, so also must an editor be inspired as she sees what the author is trying to accomplish for the Kingdom. That being said, the Christian editor must be just as skilled as any editor in helping the writer say exactly what he wants to say. Each specialty in Christian writing demands a different sort of editing. For example, Christian curriculum must be tailored to the audience, whether it's for young children, middle schoolers, high schoolers, or adults. Then, with each lesson, there must be a clear outcome and the lesson must be written in such a way that teachers will know what to do and students will be able to succeed. A good curriculum editor will also examine scope and sequence. For devotional materials, requirements from publishers may be highly structured; for example, the word count for each devotion may be precise. A good editor will be able to trim or expand the devotion to fit specifications. For Bible study articles, the editor will ensure that the Scripture being discussed is used in context and interpreted with fidelity to the text. For Christian books, whether they are expository text, self-help books, or books devoted to a particular topic (such as death and dying), they must be written in such a way as to appeal to the target audience, have a clear structure, have a strong point of view, and have a "voice," or style. The editor will help to ensure those things. Most of all, a Christian author must understand that her writing must be not just as good as other writing, but even better. That's what a Christian editor will help her to do.
