Edit articles to correct grammar, structure, style

Preference: business, economics, health, sports

Copy editing deals with correcting grammar, usage, and sentence construction in an article. This is also known as micro-editing. Content editing involves improving the style and organization of an article or book, or macro-editing.

More often than not, editing involves working on both copy and content. For instance, the integrity of an article’s contents automatically get reviewed by a copy editor when checking grammar and structure. (The longer the manuscript, the bigger the chance of deviation from the thematic flow.) In fact, hiring an editor to work on both the copy and content is the practical and economic thing to do. After going through an article, the copy editor knows where the weak and strong points are, where the direction veers off, which paragraph or sentence is better where.

There are many fields and disciplines in writing, all of which need editing to achieve their most reader-friendly form. Copy and content editors are usually adept in a wide range of topics. They have to be, actually, to stay “fit” and flexible.

After years of work, specialization tends to occur, particularly when the editor is exposed to specific areas and themes for extended periods. On the other hand, some editors choose to focus on certain fields that interest them (for example, business, economics, health, and sports). Usually, the difference between an area of specialization and all other areas is merely the amount and speed of familiarization that the editor requires. However, some fields of specialization require academic or related expertise; for which reason, the editor is paid premium rates.
