Academic ESL Proofreading/Editing

English proofreader/editor for non-native speakers

Are you an academic for whom English is your second or other language? For the non-native speaker of English, having oneís dissertation, thesis, grant application, abstract, journal article, book manuscript, or other scholarly work checked by a native-speaking editor or proofreader is essential. An editor who specializes in ESL editing/proofreading understands the challenges the non-native speaker faces when writing in English and has the ability not only to help the writer polish his or her English, but also to explain why a change needs to be made. The ESL editor ideally has experience learning languages and thus is often able to recognize a thought even when hidden behind non-idiomatic or ungrammatical English. Furthermore, if the ESL editor is trained to teach English as a Second Language (TESL), he or she is better qualified to explain correct grammar and usage so that non-native speakers can understand their mistakes and consequently improve their own writing.

If your English language abilities are superior, your work may only require light proofreading; the ESL editor will proofread for correct spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, vocabulary, and idiomatic usage.

If your English is still in need of improvement, an ESL editor can edit your work not only for spelling, grammar, and vocabulary, but also for sentence structure, logic, clarity, and coherence, both at the sentence level and overall. The ESL editor can also explain academic standards in the English-speaking world in areas such as correct citation (avoiding plagiarism) and bias-free language.

ESL editing and proofreading is more than just fixing up your writing; it is also helping you understand your mistakes so you can gain independence as a writer.

Note that if you are submitting your work (dissertation, Masterís thesis, etc.) to an instructor or supervisor in fulfillment of course or degree requirements, written permission from your instructor or supervisor will usually be required before editing or proofreading can begin.

“I found a company called Demand Studios in “The Editorial.” I am now making $1,000 to $1,800 per week editing short “How To” articles for ehow.com. I'm loving it!” Judi
