Global issues occur on nearly all continents, and are affecting people of all races, social classes, and ways of life. Global Issues has become an umbrella for many of the cultural and natural crises arising on regional and global scales. Among the diverse topics that fall under such a heading, one can find climate change, warfare, economic collapse, energy shortages, environmental pollution, violence against women and girls, inequality, discrimination, the drug trade, rural to urban migration, overpopulation, unemployment, loss of biodiversity.
Global Issues may examine the cultural survival of a people in crisis, whether it be a natural crisis such as drought, or a human-caused crisis such as environmental pollution in the Amazon rainforest. Such issues affect communities on local, regional and even global scales. The loss of biodiversity has great implications for farmers, fishers, and those who exploit the living sectors of the world. Of course, a big topic these days is climate change, with its influences on water supplies, coastal settlements, and fishing grounds. Human warfare, more than simply conflict between cultural groups, is often tied to a natural resource such as water or arable land, or even mineral deposits. Global economic collapse may be happening now, though governments and NGOs are scrambling to develop coping strategies to adapt to the new realities. Some describe the 21st Century as the beginning of our civilization's energy descent, tracing a trajectory of declining energy resources and increasing efficiency of energy use. Other issues may include energy shortages, environmental pollution, violence against women and girls, inequality, discrimination, the drug trade, cities, overcrowding, public health, hygiene, rural to urban migration, overpopulation, unemployment, loss of biodiversity, slavery, sweatshops, labor, offshore, underemployed, hidden unemployment...the list goes on and on.
