Scientific, Technical, Medical Editing

Editing biology, psychology, behavioral science, n

This specialization is STM editing, or scientific, technical, and medical editing. It includes editing and proofreading journals and books about neuroscience, neurobiology, obstetrics, gynecology, nursing, physics, engineering, psychology, psychiatry, and all aspects of medicine. Examples are the Journal of the American Medical Association and The Lancet. These journals are usually owned by medical associations. The journals are usually published monthly, bimonthly, or quarterly. The journals are generally in APA, Chicago, or AMA editorial styles. The editor/proofreader works on hard copy or computer, usually in Microsoft Word. A freelance editor edits the medical manuscripts at home and e-mails or mails them to the journal editor. The editor is knowledgeable about medical terminology, chemical names, drug compounds, research methodology, statistics reporting, and journal manuscript structure. The editor has a degree in writing, publishing, medicine, or languages and is an expert with grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Accuracy in tables and figures is very important to scientific, technical, and medical editing. The editor must be an expert with many reference and citation styles as well and must be able to query authors about missing or incorrect reference information and statistics that may be incorrect in the text. The editor incorporates the authorís changes into the manuscript and style tags the manuscript, then returns it to the journal editor. The copyeditor works quickly and accurately and always returns projects by the deadline.

“I found a company called Demand Studios in “The Editorial.” I am now making $1,000 to $1,800 per week editing short “How To” articles for ehow.com. I'm loving it!” Judi
