Screenplay and stage play rewriting and editing

Plot, dialog and character tuneup

Screenplay editing can save a good, but flawed, script from obscurity. A careful rewrite by a dramaturg, or an experienced screenplay writer or playwright, can heighten dramatic tension, clarify characters, make dialog more memorable, and in general help the script toward the state where a potential producer will keep reading...and may eventually offer to turn the script into a movie or stage production.

Beginning screenwriters sometimes fall into the trap. laid for them by the writers of books and the creators of courses, of thinking that there is a magical screenplay formula, and that learning and following it will guarantee success for a script. While adhering to one of the standard script formulae will get you a certain dstance, it is unlikely to take the script where you want it to go all by itself. The formula is far less important than filling the script with sparkling dialogue, believable characters in believable conflict, and an outcome we care about. A script doctor can help you identify and buff up the un-shiny parts of your script, and make the bright parts glisten.

When an editor helps you, don't expect to just sit back and watch it happen. The editor will slash at your script with a red pencil, effacing some of your favorite lines and scenes--and then challenge you to write better ones. The editor will ask leading questions, but will not provide the answers for you. The editor's job, ultimately, is to help you see where the issues are, and to hand you the tools with which to address them. You do the work...but then, it is your script.

“I found a company called Demand Studios in “The Editorial.” I am now making $1,000 to $1,800 per week editing short “How To” articles for ehow.com. I'm loving it!” Judi
