Extensive travel, domestically or globally, provides experience that every travel writer and editor needs. Firsthand experience in other areas is essential, of course, but so is the act of traveling – the planes, the lodging, the missed connections.

In-depth knowledge of living conditions in other parts of the world also offers insight for travel editing and proofreading. Not only is an experienced traveler more likely to know when you can’t get there from here, but an experienced traveler also knows how to spell the places and, hopefully, a way to get there from here. Off-the-beaten-track locations, eco-tourism and adventure trips are hot in travel writing now. An editor who has been there and done that should be the first one to read your writing.

Extensive traveling also offers insight into daily life in other parts of the world, meaning an experienced travel editor and proofreader can also act as a travel and lifestyle writer. Knowing firsthand what the locals eat, where they get it and how they cook it can make for captivating reading when written by someone who has lived among the locals.

Life in the Third World differs greatly from what most people experience, and Third World insight makes for excellent global issues writing and global issues editing. Travel writers, editors and proofreaders shouldn’t be limited to vacations but should be able to write and edit writing about other parts of the world, even if it covers long time frames and not the standard two-week trip.
Family travel, another hot topic, should be edited and proofread by someone who has been on trips with kids. Traveling with children is an adventure in itself and it helps to have someone who’s had that adventure reading over your writing.

Of course, extensive travel doesn’t make a travel editor or proofreader. Excellent grammar, spelling, accuracy, attention to deadlines, quick turnaround, attention to detail and decades of experience round out the package.

“I found a company called Demand Studios in “The Editorial.” I am now making $1,000 to $1,800 per week editing short “How To” articles for ehow.com. I'm loving it!” Judi
