Editing academic papers, essays, theses.

Academic editing and fact-checking.

Academic editing is a slightly different animal to most other types of editing. Not only do topics tend to have their own nomenclature and idiosyncratic lexical use – which cannot be ignored or changed (usually), because most academic writing is going to other academics, often working in a similar area, rather than the public.
Therefore, academic editing often entails leaving more in a document than would normally feel right. Training manuals and corporate policies need to be succinct with no room for interpretation; editorials need to appeal to a broad-base of readers; advertorials need to target a specific group with the appropriate content and delivery medium – but academic papers are often wordy, somewhat repetitive and include topic-specific phrases and terminology. All of this is as it should be.
The credo all editors should live by – first do no harm – is possibly more imperative in academic editing than any other. First, academic work is in the writer’s voice and the editor should not influence or affect this in any way; second, just because the editor doesn’t fully understand (although research is expected) or eve agree with a comment, does not mean they have any leeway to alter things. That said, comprehensive notes accompanying any academic editing, highlighting linguistic or contextual anomalies for the writer, are the hallmark of a good academic editor.
Academic work includes papers (such as about the parlous state of human rights work in different parts of the world), to dissertations longer than a slim volume of short stories. Usually they are fascinating, if sometimes eccentric in their linguistic delivery, but, as mentioned, this is academia’s prerogative.
