Children's Book Editor

Children's Book Writer

A children's book editor focuses her edit on reading level, age appropriateness, and sometimes on school curriculum and standards. Facts must be accurate and information must be presented in an interesting, fun-to-read way without being oversimplified. The children's book editor will guide authors to clarity, creativity, and accuracy while staying true to the author's tone and voice. This is the case for books written at all reading levels and for all ages, including picture books, middle grade chapter books, and young adult (YA) books. Whether editing fiction or nonfiction, the children's book editor helps authors, if necessary, write fun and compelling text at the reading level that is just right for the target audience.

Tools used by children's book editors may include various readability tests to help keep sentence structure, sentence length, and vocabulary appropriate for the age group that the author is focusing on. A truly skilled editor will know how to use these tests, as well as the rules of grammar, to guide the author's work. She will know when to break rules such as when it's OK to use a difficult vocabulary word or a longer, more complex sentence than usual for the author's targeted age group.

Maybe most important is that a children's book editor must have an eye for the whimsical as well as for accurate facts and the rules of grammar. She helps authors keep their young reading audience in focus as they create interesting, fun, and compelling books that may influence children for years to come.

“I found a company called Demand Studios in “The Editorial.” I am now making $1,000 to $1,800 per week editing short “How To” articles for ehow.com. I'm loving it!” Judi
