Even though I have not worked professionally as an editor, my personal experice as described above has prepared me adequately. I have both a B. S. and M. A. in Education from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia, USA. The primary area of study for my undergraduate degree was in the area of Health and Physical Education which permitted me to be accepted into the Peace Corps. A month after receiving my B. S., I started training in Ponce, Puerto Rico and three months later was sent to a South American country to work in a government program which was helping normal school teachers obtained the equivalence of a high school diploma. Normal school teachers were teachers who had become teachers after being an apprentice to a classroom elementary school. I ended up staying for more than the two contracted years with the Peace Corps; and in order to support myself, I started tutoring high school students to help them pass their English courses and teaching English conversation classes at private academies. I soon discovered that I had strong analytical abilities concerning language. When I began a graduate program, my major area became English. With the help of a course adviser who had worked in the area of teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), I took courses related to English grammar, linguistics, reading, and writing. When I returned to the South American country, I began teaching in an ESL program at one of the campuses of the national teachers college.
