Copywriters

Copywriters are professionals who write the words used in newspapers, radio, television, and magazine advertisements. Copywriters also write promotional or informational booklets, sales promotion materials, publicity releases or merchandising campaigns. In addition, copy writers may sometimes write radio and television commercials about products or services.

The duties of copywriters include: studying products to decide the main selling features; thinking up names for products and slogans to appear on the packaging materials of the products; write headlines and text that is appealing to target customer group; write adverts for newspapers, magazines and other media materials; write brochures, annual reports, documents, speeches and other promotional or sales material; and to determine the most suitable approach for the materials to be developed.

There are two areas that copy writers can further specialize in. these are: they may choose to be continuity writers, whose role is to write scripts for announcers to provide continuity for radio and television broadcast. They can also choose to train further and thus become creative designers in advertising agencies or advertising managers in retail firms.

As a copywriter, you are expected to posses the following traits: you should be observant and have a critical way of thinking so as to be inquisitive as you approaches all issues; you should have insight into human behavior and know what motivates people; you should be analytical in the way you deal with issues; you are supposed to be original and very creative; you should be a good writer and your writing should be clear; you should be able to concentrate well at all situations; you should also possess technical skills and abilities for the job and you should be able to work under pressure.

The market for copywriters is huge; all businesses whether large or small need to promote themselves in order to increase sales and profitability. All companies need leaflets, mail letters and/ or web pages. In addition, all new products need to be packaged in a way that entices customers to buy it. And to top it all, we realize that all organizations need to communicate. Therefore, the need for copywriters is real and the copywriters have great opportunities.
