Poetry Writing Contests

Poetry Writing Contest Description

EditFast will hold 12 poetry writing contests every year (one per month). The monthly poetry writing contest is free to all and open to any topic apart from the exclusions listed below. The top three winners each month will be published in a yearly hardback volume "36 Poems On Life." At the discretion of the judges, all well written poems may be published on the Web site. In order to publish the poems, EditFast must reserve First Rights on all submissions.

What is Poetry?

There are many definitions of "poetry," but for our purposes here it refers to an imaginative awareness of experience expressed through meaning, sound, and rhythmic language choices so as to evoke an emotional response. Poetry has been known to employ meter and rhyme, but this is by no means necessary. Poetry is an ancient form that has gone through numerous and drastic reinvention over time. The very nature of poetry as an authentic and individual mode of expression makes it nearly impossible to define.

  2. Check the box at the bottom to confirm that you have read the Rules and Regulations

  4. Excessive violence, sex or religious extremism, determined by the judges, will result in disqualification.
  5. Entries may not have been previously published in professional media.
  6. Entries must be submitted in electronic format via our submission form (read the rules and regulations, then click "CONTINUE" at the bottom)

  8. Each entry must have a cover page with the title of the work, the author's name, full mailing address, telephone number and email address. Every subsequent page must carry the title and a page number, but NOT the author's name (to facilitate fair judging).
  9. The EditFast poetry contest runs every week. To be eligible for the following week's contest, your submission must be received by midnight (PST) on the last day of the week (Saturday) prior to the contest.
  10. Each entrant may submit only one poem per contest.
  11. All entries are final. No revisions are accepted.
  12. The decisions of the judges are entirely their own, and are final.
  13. The top three winners each month will be included in our yearly publication of "36 Poems On Life."
