The Series Comma

The series comma is used to separate items in a list of three or more items. Items in a list can be single words, phrases, or clauses.

Examples:

• We purchased books, papers, pencils, and erasers. (words in a list)
• He studies for an hour in the morning, at noon, and in the evening. (prepositional phrases in a list)
• John typed the letter, Mary copied it, and I mailed it. (main clauses in a list)
