A buyer's truck is rated to tow 9,000 pounds, and the trailer they are looking at has a dry weight of 7,200 pounds, so the salesperson tells them it is well within capacity. Loaded with water, propane, gear and the cargo the buyer actually plans to carry, the trailer's real weight is closer to 8,900 pounds, which is within the truck's towing capacity but exceeds the truck's payload rating once the tongue weight is added to what is already in the truck bed, a distinction the dry-weight comparison never raised and that determines whether the combination is actually safe and legal to drive rather than simply mathematically under one number.

The complete weight comparison is what actually determines towing safety, and its failure is a single figure — usually dry weight against towing capacity — presented as though it were the whole calculation when several other ratings must all be satisfied simultaneously. Within towing capacity is true and radically incomplete, because a vehicle has a separate payload rating, a gross combined weight rating, and a tongue weight allowance, and a trailer can pass the first comparison while failing any of the others. We work through these so the comparison is made using loaded trailer weight, not dry weight, since dry weight excludes water, propane, batteries, and the buyer's own gear, and the real weight being towed is reliably a thousand pounds or more above the number printed on the trailer's spec sheet; so payload is checked separately from towing capacity, given that tongue weight, passengers, and cargo already in the tow vehicle all count against payload rather than towing capacity, and a rig within one rating can still exceed the other; so gross combined weight rating is checked against the actual combined weight of a loaded tow vehicle and loaded trailer together, because this is the rating that determines whether the whole combination, not just the trailer alone, is within what the vehicle is built to handle; so tongue weight is stated as an actual expected figure for the specific trailer and its typical load, rather than a general percentage rule that a buyer has no way to apply to their own vehicle's payload; so a buyer's specific vehicle and its actual ratings, found on that vehicle's own certification label, are used in place of a generic advertised towing capacity figure that may not apply to their specific configuration; and so a buyer's question about a specific combination receives a calculation against their actual numbers, not a general reassurance that the trailer is a popular match for that class of truck. Disclosures written this way mean a buyer finds out whether a combination is safe before they are on the highway with it, not after.
