Promotion and Tenure Packages Editing and Proofreading Services

The dossier runs to four hundred pages. The committee has nine of them to read before Thursday, and most members are from other departments. What they will actually rely on is the candidate's own five-page statement — and in most dossiers that statement narrates a career chronologically, leaving each reader to work out for themselves what the case is.

We edit promotion and tenure dossiers and their central documents — candidate statements and narratives, research, teaching and service sections, impact and esteem evidence, responses to external reviews, teaching portfolios and evaluation summaries, mid-term review documents, and the covering material for appeals. Our editors work on the one document a busy committee reads properly.

The candidate's own statement is where a promotion case is made or left to be assembled by strangers, and its failure is a chronology instead of an argument. A committee from other disciplines cannot construct your case for you. We work through these so the statement opens with the claim being made in the institution's own criteria, since a reader checking a candidate against three criteria needs to know which one this paragraph serves; so the trajectory is stated rather than the sequence — what changed about the work, when the candidate became independent, what they are now known for — because a list of outputs in date order describes activity and promotion turns on direction; so the significance of work is explained for readers outside the field in one sentence each, given that a physicist assessing a historian will otherwise fall back on counting; so external recognition is presented as what other people did — invitations, citations in named contexts, adoption of a method, roles held — rather than as self-assessment; so teaching is evidenced with something other than satisfaction scores, since these are known to be weak and a committee will discount a case resting on them; so any interruption is stated once with its effect on output, as the alternative is a committee doing arithmetic without knowing about a year of leave; so service is described by what it required and delivered rather than listed as membership; and so the statement points to where in the four hundred pages each claim is supported. Statements written this way make the case for a reader who has nine pages of attention.

Everything you send is treated in confidence, including dossiers, external reviews and material relating to unsuccessful cases. We are editors rather than committee members or academic advisers, and we offer no view on any case, criteria or decision. What we can do is make the argument instead of leaving it to be inferred.
