"Professional finish" is one of the criteria a cosmetology student is graded against, and the phrase means whatever the instructor holding the grading sheet thinks it means. One instructor trained in a salon that blow-dried everything, and another trained in a salon that did not. Both are grading the same student, on the same afternoon, and on a client who came in for a haircut and is also an assessment opportunity. When the grade is disputed, the school has nothing written down to settle it against.

What the editing involves

A criterion asking for "a professional finish", "appropriate sectioning", or "good client care" produces grades that vary by assessor and disputes the school cannot settle. We rewrite criteria so that each one names an outcome an instructor can see: tension consistent enough that the section holds without slipping, no product on the skin at the hairline, and timing inside the stated range. The consultation criteria work the same way, with the client asked before the chemical goes on, the answer recorded on the form, and the record dated. None of this changes what the school considers competent work.

Grade boundaries hold better when they are illustrated than when they are described. Three photographs on one page do more than three paragraphs of prose, and a school that owns pictures of its own students' work can set a pass, a merit, and a fail beside each other. Safety criteria belong in a group of their own, marked as failing the assessment on their own account whatever the rest of the sheet says. A criterion the school has marked critical, such as "the patch test result is read before any chemical is applied", belongs in that group and nowhere else. The school and its awarding body decide which criteria are critical and where the safety line sits. Our part is to keep the group separate, worded identically in the handbook and on the marking sheet, and placed where a student meets it before reaching the clinic floor.

Everything you send us is treated in confidence, including student records, client information from the school clinic, and material still in draft. We are editors, not trainers, assessors, or licensing advisors, and we offer no view on technique, safety practice, awarding body requirements, or state licensing standards. What we can do is make a criterion specific, a procedure followable, and student material clear.
