Drafts arrive at one of two extremes: a few lines, because setting down what happened is unbearable and the person has spent years avoiding it, or 14 pages that never reach what the decision-maker has to determine. We restructure the statement around the decision points rather than as a story, taking each in turn: what happened and when, what the effect was at the time, what the effect is now, and how it limits the specific daily activities the criteria name. Which criteria apply is the organization's own ground, and the caseworker tells us which points a statement has to reach.

The account of current limitation has to be concrete and unflattering, which is the hardest instruction in the template to follow. Claimants understate by habit, and a statement saying "I manage fine on good days" describes the good days to someone reading for the worst ones. A template asking for one specific bad day, with the date and a note of what could not be done, draws a more accurate answer than one asking how the condition affects daily life. Traumatic detail should go no further than the criteria require, because a statement does not become more persuasive by holding more of what the person cannot bear to write.
