A set design drawing shows a raised platform with a staircase, labelled simply "platform, 4ft high." The construction crew builds it to look right from the audience's seats, using the same framing they would for a purely decorative piece, because nothing on the drawing told them that two actors would be dancing on it eight shows a week, or what load that actually implied for the framing, the decking, and the staircase treads. The platform looks exactly right at the technical rehearsal. It also flexes visibly under the second actor's weight, and the fix now has to happen during tech week instead of during the build.

The disclosed structural use is what a set drawing actually needs stated alongside its appearance, and its failure is a dimension and a height with no indication of what the piece will actually be asked to support once actors are using it. Platform, 4ft high describes a shape; it does not describe whether the piece bears foot traffic only, dancing, a second actor, or a scenic element lowered onto it, and a construction shop building from dimensions alone will frame it to look right rather than to bear what it is actually going to bear. We work through these so the intended use of every load-bearing element is stated specifically — foot traffic, dance choreography for two performers, a lowered scenic piece weighing an estimated amount — since a platform built for foot traffic and one built for choreographed movement require different framing, and a drawing that specifies only appearance leaves this decision to whoever is building it; so any concentrated or dynamic load is flagged distinctly from a general use description, given that two people dancing in the same spot produces a different structural demand than the same two people simply standing on a platform, and this distinction needs to be visible on the drawing rather than left to be discovered during tech week; so materials and construction methods for load-bearing elements are specified with what they need to achieve, rather than chosen by the shop based on appearance alone, because a piece that looks finished can still be structurally inadequate for its actual use; so any changes to blocking or choreography that affect how a piece is used are communicated back to the person who specified its structural capacity, given that a piece designed for standing and later used for jumping is now being used outside its specified capacity with nobody having checked; and so a construction shop's specific question about a specific piece's capacity receives a direct answer with the actual load in mind, not a repetition of the drawing's dimensions. Specifications written this way mean a structural problem is caught during the build, not during tech week with a show opening in days.
