Garage Door Services Editing and Proofreading Services

A garage door spring is a coil holding several hundred pounds of tension. When one breaks, the door becomes a weight balanced on nothing, and a customer who has been told the door "needs a service" will keep opening it — including on the morning somebody is standing underneath it. The engineer knew. The invoice said "spring worn, replacement advised".

We edit what garage door installers and repairers produce — safety inspection findings and do-not-use advice, spring, cable and safety device documentation, quotations for repair and replacement, new door quotations and their inclusions, automation, remote and safety edge information, terms of business and callout charges, annual service and maintenance documentation, guarantee terms and their conditions, insurance and landlord reporting, and customer guidance on safe operation. Our editors work on the finding that has to stop somebody using the door.

The safety finding is where a garage door business either prevents an injury or records one, and its failure is trade language with an advisory tone. "Spring fatigued, replacement advised" is a technical note and a customer will read it as maintenance. We write these so the consequence is described physically rather than named as a fault — what the door will do, how fast, and what is underneath it — since a customer who understands that the door can drop uncontrolled will stop using it and one told a spring is worn will not; so the position is stated as one of three and only three: safe to use, safe to use with a stated restriction, or do not use at all until repaired; so where the advice is do not use, the practical instruction is given for how to secure the door in the meantime and how to get a car out; so the components that fail without warning are distinguished from those that fail gradually, given that customers reasonably assume everything gives notice; so the presence or absence of a safety device is stated with what it does, particularly for automated doors and where children use the garage; so the price of the safety work is separated from any cosmetic or convenience work quoted at the same time, as bundling them makes the safety item look optional; and so the finding is written on the paperwork and not only said at the door. Findings written this way get the door fixed before somebody is under it.

Everything you send is treated in confidence, including reports, quotations and customer correspondence. We are editors rather than engineers or safety advisers, and we offer no view on door safety, components or repairs. What we can do is describe the consequence rather than name the fault.
