Eleven tons of precast double tee arrives on a flatbed at 7:15 in the morning, and the crew waiting to unload it has never handled one. Whether it ends up in the building or in three pieces on the yard depends on facts only the plant knows. Which way up it has to stay, where the lifting anchors are, and what it can be set down on are not visible from the unit itself. Neither is how long it must stay propped before anything is built on it. All of it has to travel with the unit in writing, because the crew unloading has no other source.

Handling, lifting, and temporary support instructions are the documents we see most from precast plants. Delivery and site information for each unit type arrives with them, along with product technical data and load capacity documentation. We also work on factory production control and plant certification records, installation and jointing instructions, storage and stacking guidance, tolerance and dimensional deviation schedules, curing and strength development information, product conformity declarations, and technical support responses to contractors and designers. What the editing involves
The handling instruction fails by describing the product instead of instructing the person unloading it. A datasheet quoting a characteristic load capacity of 42 kips tells a rigger nothing about whether the unit may be lifted from two anchors or four. The lifting arrangement belongs in the document as the only permitted one, with the anchors identified, the sling angle limit stated, and any spreader beam requirement named. An eleven-ton unit lifted at the wrong angle can fail well below its service load, and nobody on the yard can tell that from a load table.
Orientation belongs in the same instruction, together with what happens if the unit is turned, because precast is often strong in service and fragile in transit. Storage and stacking rules need the bearing positions, the maximum number high, and the packing requirement, since a unit cracked in the stack tends to fail during installation. A propping note reading "props may be struck after 7 days" gets acted on after 7 days, whatever the concrete has reached. The condition for removal is better written as a strength, a completed element, or a signed release. The load that may be applied before the unit is fully connected belongs there too, because the temporary condition governs and only the plant has that figure.
Tolerance the site should expect belongs in inches rather than in a reference to a standard, and the whole instruction should address the person on the flatbed. A sentence reading "units shall be handled in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations" sends the reader back to the plant for a document nobody brought. An instruction reading "use only the four cast-in anchors marked in red, with a spreader beam, and keep the sling angle above sixty degrees" can be followed by somebody holding a sling.
