A design brief handed to the manufacturing team says the product should feel "premium and solid in the hand." The manufacturing engineer receiving it has no way to turn that sentence into a wall thickness, a material grade, or a tolerance, so they make reasonable engineering decisions on their own, and the first production sample comes back light, slightly flexible at the seam, and nothing like what the designer pictured, because the designer's intent was never actually translated into the numbers manufacturing needed to build to.

The translated specification is what a design intent actually needs behind it before manufacturing can build to it, and its failure is a sensory description handed to an engineer with nothing underneath it they can actually design against. Premium and solid in the hand describes an experience; it does not specify a wall thickness, a material density, a seam tolerance, or a weight target, and a manufacturing engineer working from the sensory description alone will make a decision, just not necessarily the one the designer intended. We work through these so a sensory design intent is translated into an actual physical specification — minimum wall thickness, target weight, specific material grade, maximum seam gap — before it reaches manufacturing, since "solid in the hand" as a target weight of 180-200 grams and a wall thickness of 2.2mm gives an engineer something to actually build to, and the sentence alone does not; so any prototype deviation from the intended feel is documented against the specific measurement that produced it, given that a prototype that feels wrong needs a stated cause — the wall thickness measured 1.6mm against a 2.2mm target — rather than a general note that it "doesn't feel right yet"; so material and finish are specified with an actual grade or standard, because "premium finish" produces a different result from every supplier interpreting the word separately, and a specific finish standard removes that variation; so tolerances are stated with what they actually protect — a seam gap tolerance stated because it affects both the visual line and the perceived solidity — rather than a generic tolerance applied without explaining what quality it is meant to preserve; and so a manufacturing partner's specific question about a specific requirement receives the actual number and its reasoning, not a repetition of the sensory brief. Handoffs written this way mean a prototype comes back close to what was actually intended, not close to what an engineer reasonably guessed.
